PlanBase Improvement is an innovative three-day training course that teaches the theory and practice of process improvement in a unique and exciting learning environment.  It develops participants' knowledge, skill, and enthusiasm for a six-step improvement methodology.  It incorporates the Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle (PDCA), and other necessary process improvement tools.  This course won Hewlett Packard's "Best Education" award and has been delivered with great success worldwide.

Course modules cover (selected topics):

  • Using data
  • Project planning
  • Describing processes
  • Cause and effect diagrams, check sheets, and control charts
  • Standardization
  • Analysis tools: scatter diagrams, histograms, variation, etc.

Each module is presented and applied in a challenging, hands-on, team learning environment.  The course leverages a unique simulation exercise in which participants take on a new role working with a process in a fictitious company.  The participants work with facilitators in small teams and come together for brief lectures on the course modules then return to breakout rooms to work in their new roles.  This simulation allows participants to immediately apply the tools they have learned.  Through repeated application of the method and tools during these sessions they become confident and skilled in bringing about significant process improvement.

Objectives

To become confident and skilled in the application of the PlanBase Improvement methodology which incorporates Plan, Do, Check, Act, (PDCA), and the necessary process improvement tools.

Course Details

Audience

All levels of employees interested in improving their processes using a proven, scientific method.  On successful completion participants will be able to lead or support a process improvement team or initiative.

Skill Building Exercises

The course centers on building skills and confidence in process improvement using each and every one of the tools.  Each tool will be used many times over during the course of the three days, incorporating data from the new work role in the fictitious company.  The simulation exercise enhances each participant's knowledge and skills in the methodology and tools.

Program Format and Materials

This course lasts three days and accommodates 18 participants divided into three teams of six.  The course involves 35% trainer presentation, 50% participant hands on application and 15% participant lead presentation and discussion.  Trainers ensure the participants have the necessary support to learn, practice, and feel confident in their new skills.  Train-the-trainer, course participant manuals, and an improvement guide on the methodology are provided as needed.  Simulation exercise materials are also provided.  We deliver PlanBase Improvement at our sites on yours, or provide you with the ability and materials to deliver it yourself.
